Catholic Cemeteries of Chicago recently commissioned JNKA to develop a preliminary design to add new garden crypts at Saint Joseph Cemetery in River Grove. Departing from the contemporary flat‐roof design of the existing crypt structures, our proposed design is a contextual response to an historic Gothic mausoleum located on-axis with the center bay of our primary crypt building.
This same axis terminates with a new statue of Saint Joseph, the Patron Saint of a Happy Death. Our design provides 426 crypts and features decorative masonry detailing, celestial blue vaulted ceilings, stone corner piers with copper spires, and mosaic imagery of various Saints for additional artistic beauty and wayfinding.
